Food diversification is a key step in a baby's development. Around 4 to 6 months, it's time to introduce the first solid foods. But where to start? Traditional purees or BLW (Baby-Led Weaning)? TrioNest™ guides you.
🍼 When to start diversification?
The WHO recommends starting diversification at 6 months of age, but some pediatricians recommend starting between 4 and 6 months depending on the child's development. Signs that baby is ready:
- They can hold their head upright without assistance
- They show interest in what you're eating
- They no longer have the extrusion reflex (they no longer push everything out with their tongue)
- They can sit with support
🥣 Traditional purees: the classic method
The classic method consists of offering smooth purees, then gradually more textured ones over the weeks. This is the most common method in France.
Advantages: control over quantities, gradual introduction of allergens, less risk of choking.
Disadvantages: requires preparation time, baby explores natural textures less.

🥦 BLW (Baby-Led Weaning): baby in charge
BLW involves directly offering soft pieces that baby grasps and eats alone. No purees — baby explores food at their own pace.
Advantages: develops fine motor skills, autonomy, acceptance of textures, less food neophobia.
Disadvantages: more mess, requires constant supervision, not recommended before 6 months.
🤝 The mixed method: the best of both worlds
Many parents opt for a mixed approach: purees in the morning and evening, soft pieces at midday. This is often the most practical solution and the most adapted to the rhythm of French families' lives.
🍎 Which foods to start with?
- Vegetables: zucchini, carrot, green beans, sweet potato
- Fruits: cooked apple, pear, mashed banana
- Cereals: rice, gluten-free oats (before 6 months)
- Proteins: to be introduced gradually after 6 months
Introduce one new food every 3 days to detect potential allergies.
