Free movement: how to set up baby's space

Motricité libre : comment aménager l'espace pour bébé TrioNest™

Free movement is an educational approach that allows babies to develop at their own pace, without forcing them into positions they haven't yet mastered. For this, the environment plays a key role. TrioNest™ explains how to set up the ideal space.

🧠 What is free movement?

Theorized by pediatrician Emmi Pikler, free movement is based on a simple principle: babies should be able to explore and move freely, without being placed in positions they cannot reach on their own (sitting, standing). Each stage — back, tummy, rolling over, crawling, standing — must be discovered naturally.

🏠 How to set up the space?

The floor above all

The floor is baby's main playground. Choose:

  • A soft and firm playmat: neither too soft (risk of suffocation) nor too hard. A foam mat covered with cotton is ideal.
  • A sufficiently large surface: at least 1m x 1m so that the baby can roll over freely.
  • A safe space: no furniture with sharp corners, no dangerous objects within reach.

Adapted toys

In free movement, toys should encourage exploration without imposing a position:

  • Wooden or silicone teething rings
  • Textured grasping balls
  • Unbreakable floor mirror (babies love to look at themselves)
  • Safe everyday objects (wooden spoon, colorful fabric)
  • Visual mobiles at appropriate height

Lighting and environment

Opt for soft natural light. Avoid excessive sound and visual stimulation — babies need calm to concentrate on their movements.

⏰ At what age to start?

  • From birth: lay baby on their back on a soft mat
  • 2-3 months: they start to turn their head, wave their arms and legs
  • 4-6 months: they roll over, grasp objects
  • 6-9 months: they crawl, get on all fours
  • 9-12 months: they pull themselves up, walk along furniture

⚠️ What to avoid

  • Bouncers and rockers used for too long (limit movement)
  • Walkers (not recommended by pediatricians)
  • Forcing baby to sit or stand before they can do so on their own
